Left 4 Dead - Max Out Forum Review
Released: November 18th 2008
Left 4 Dead isn’t just another zombie game; this zombie game has everything which has been good about other zombie games and more! There are 4 main campaigns with each having a different storyline to follow but with the same characters and enemies. This makes it easy for the user to relate to each character, and after a short time of playing you very quickly choose your favourite character. The choice of Francis, Louis (PILLS HERE!), Bill and Zoe gives you 3 unique characters each with their own personality and with different character traits.
The story lines, although having very similar sort of feel to them (Zombies! Run! Quick escape! Oh no its a tank! Ahh! Phew we’re safe (summed up very quickly)) the stories never seem to get old, and you can sit there playing the same campaign over and over again, and it just doesn’t get boring. This is why I think the developers at Valve really made something special with Left 4 Dead.
The graphic’s aren’t draw droppingly good, and you won’t go Oh MY GOD!!! When you see them, but in this game I don’t particularly think that this is as important because the storyline makes up for what the graphics are lacking. I’m not saying the graphics are bad, because the detail on the characters is very good, but I don’t think personally that the scenery and the landscapes are anything of great celebration, they seem to be a little bit plain and simple, and the artists could have done a lot more with the landscape to give it that extra wow factor.
The multiplayer of Left 4 Dead gives the player more gaming types. There’s co-op mode which is the campaigns but playing online with friends, or a quick match with random gamers. This is again the same campaigns but with that extra something as team work will be key to surviving the co-op games.
There is standard versus mode, with a twist. This is not gun wielder vs gun wielder, human vs human. In versus mode on Left 4 Dead you can play for the humans side, or play for the zombies. The idea for the humans is too complete the campaign (again completing the same campaign you’ve completed already, it still doesn’t get boring). The objective for the zombies is pretty simple, don’t let them complete the campaign. When playing for the zombies you don’t play as a normal zombie who dies with one bullet, you get to play as either: a Boomer, a Hunter, a Smoker or the Tank. I won’t go into any details of these zombies or their special ‘powers/mutations’ if you haven’t bought the game already the unfortunately you’ll have to buy it to find out more!
The controls of Left 4 Dead are very simple, and very straight forward so even a gaming noob will be able to pick up the controls and get straight into it. This means that the actual learning time behind coming good at the game is shorter than other games as the controls are really simple to pick up. The HUD is also very straight forward so it is easy to see what you have available and the firepower that you are packing at the time.
If you still haven’t bought Left 4 Dead 1 then I would recommend that the next gaming purchase you make is Left 4 Dead, as it is a brilliant game, and even with the release of Left 4 Dead 2, the original version is still a lot better then Left 4 Dead 2.
